Abstract

Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the anxiety of pregnant women and its related factors.

Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted for 376 pregnant women who had prenatal care in the department of obstetrics of a general hospital and a OB-GY clinic from August 15 to August 31, 2001. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data about demographic characteristics of women, health status, obstetrical factors, and spouse¡¯s support. Anxiety level was measured with State-Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger. The body weight and blood pressure were measured by nurses. Statistical methods used for data analysis were Pearson¡¯s correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis using SAS package program.

Results : The mean age of the subjects was 29.8 and 22.3% of the subjects were in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, 30.2% in the 2nd trimester and 47.1 % in the 3rd trimester. The nullipara accounted for 50.4%. In simple analysis, religion, job, relationship with husband¡¯s family members, degree of marriage satisfaction, planned pregnancy, chronic diseases prior to pregnancy, fetal health status, complication of pregnancy, hyperemesis, spouse support showed statistically significant association with anxiety. In multiple regression analysis, anxiety was associated with unsatisfactory marriage, unplanned pregnancy, chronic diseases prior to pregnancy. complication of pregnancy and severe hyperemesis.

Conclusions : This study suggests that maternal health, fetal health, hyperemesis, satisfaction of marriage were associated with anxiety level of pregnant women. Therefore, for safe and healthy delivery, it is necessary to make a plan to control anxiety according to the pregnant women¡¯s health status and marital life.
